Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”

Ephesians 4.8

Jesus is the good and perfect Savior. He came into the world to pay the price for our redemption and will return to take us to our eternal Home. This work done on our behalf will never be reversed, and on the Day of His return, we will know in depth how much we owe to the Lord. The Word says that nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:39). So, knowing what this revelation means for humanity, we need to share it with people so that they will not perish.

Adam's sin in the Garden of Eden separated us from God's plan, which was designed to last forever. However, when our first father gave in to the serpent's temptation, he handed humanity over to the devil, and with that, it became captive to him. This captivity caused people's eternal happiness to become a tangle of wrong things, leading them to the torment prepared for Satan and his angels. However, we changed direction with Christ!

It was not an easy task for the Father's Only Begotten Son. In order for Christ to legally replace us and save us, He had to strip Himself of the eternal rights as the Son, Heir of all things, and become man, and then bear the suffering that was meant for us (Philippians 2:5-8). Jesus did not question and went with it until the end, enduring the affront of the evil kingdom. Great was the loss of leaving His position, living as a human being among sinners, and being crucified. However, He completed the mission!

Christ had to accomplish the work completely, without skipping any steps. When He died, He went alone to Hell to strip the devil of the power he had stolen from Adam, with which he oppressed us. Without anyone's help, Jesus did this on the cross after receiving our sins and evils. When our sins were placed on the Savior, He cried out, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27.46b).

At that moment, Christ was being separated from the Father, experiencing spiritual death. Seeing Him with our transgressions, God had to forsake Him, for being Holiness of Holiness, Consuming Fire, He could destroy Jesus because of our sins upon Him. Then, fulfilling the divine plan, the Savior said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (John 19.30b). Thus, He died physically at three o'clock in the afternoon!

Jesus descended into Hell alone. According to Isaiah, there was no one with Him: “I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no one was with Me. For I have trodden them in My anger, and trampled them in My fury; their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, and I have stained all My robes. (Isaiah 63.3). During the three days in Hell, the Lord triumphed over the enemy. Now, the devil cannot touch us (1 John 5:18). We are free!

The apostle Paul speaks of our Savior's work of redemption on behalf of humanity: Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. (Colossians 2.15). The verse studied in this message declares that Jesus did not leave the work of the devil, the defeated captivity, there in the kingdom of darkness, but when He ascended to Heaven, He took it with Him (Ephesians 4:8). Hallelujah!

In Christ, with love,

Today's Prayer

God of the complete work! Your Son was obedient to You until death, even death on the cross, and this pleased You. We also want to be faithful to Your Word. We will not give up serving You until the very end. Confident, we will carry out Your holy will!

Thanks to You, Jesus destroyed the works of the evil kingdom and took with Him the captivity that had already been undone, showing that this monstrosity never has power over those who convert and are born again. We are grateful for this blessed work!

Father, You sent Your Only Begotten Son out of love for us, and He fulfilled the mission that You gave Him. When we recognize the sacrifice of Christ and receive Him into our lives, the enemy will never again have us in his hands. We thank You for the gifts that You gave to Your people!
