For I have sworn by Myself,” says the Lord, “that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse. And all its cities shall be perpetual wastes”
Jeremiah 49.13
In this study of Jeremiah's prophecy, we have seen that it was fulfilled in its entirety in regards to Edom, the country created by Jacob's brother Esau. His descendants acted wickedly towards Israel, and this offended the Lord. This example serves as a warning to those who are evil and do not accept the plans of the Most High to do what is best for humanity. In no divine order is there any evil against anyone.
When the Word declares that God has sworn, it shows His perseverance in not turning back. It is an oath from the One who will never regret His declarations. Likewise, the Lord has already pronounced concerning us, and this will never be revoked: And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved (Matthew 10.22). Believe and live!
The prophecy begins by referring to the capital of Edom, where the decision to do good or evil would be made. Good for part of God's people, and evil for those who didn't conform to the king's decision. This also applied to the other countries. Today, Bozrah does not exist; nor do we know about the Edomites and their descendants. This was a harsh prophecy for a people who knew no mercy or peace. Let those who live in the same way be careful (Revelation 13.10)!
As well as being a desolation to those who would hear about the Edomite capital, its people would soon be despised and would be in a state of mind in which it would not be possible to recognize a single one of them. It's not easy to hear that and do nothing. Now, what matters most to man is to know where he comes from and how his blood brothers live. Those who never show mercy do not know what compassion is; as a result, they will not be protected by divine justice (James 2.13).
The people of Edom would still serve as a reproach, the condition of those who live in moral lowliness. Anyone reading this should think about this if they care about how their descendants will live! Whoever prefers to live in error, causing shame, and refuses to listen to the voice of the Lord in order to return to where they fell, will never be approved. Whoever is wise, after hurting someone, they seek that person, confess their mistake, and makes amends with them (Matthew 5.22).
The prophecy contained several curses about the Edomites, who boasted of hurting others. They joined forces with the Assyrians in order to destroy Israel. However, after a few years, when they saw the Israelites besieged by Sennacherib, because Judah also sinned, they ruled over several cities of God's people, destroying their fortresses to increase their territory. This cursed people suffered desolation from Nebuchadnezzar.
The Edomites became an abomination, and all their cities became perpetual desolations by the mouth of the Lord. Why, from a young age, did Esau act in such a way as to harm his parents, when he should have loved them? (Genesis 28.6-9). He even exchanged his birthright for a plate of food (Genesis 25.29-34)!

Today's Prayer
Lord of goodness and love! Everywhere, there are people boasting about the harm they do to others, stealing and killing innocent people. They will suffer so much! If they don't turn back, they will go to the lake of fire and brimstone!
Bozrah boasted that it had never been taken and destroyed by any nation, so it considered itself untouchable. But through Jeremiah, Your Word said the opposite of what they thought, and the prophecy was fulfilled. Have mercy on the proud!
You swore by Yourself that the capital of Edom would be a desolation, a reproach and a waste. Poor people! They were hard-hearted to the end, and all their cities became perpetual desolations. Father, have mercy on us!
