Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”

John 13:6

From the beginning of his journey with Jesus, Peter showed signs of leadership. He was the one who spoke the most among the disciples. Seeing the Master wash the feet of some and approach him with the basin of water, he asked in surprise if his feet would also be washed. The answer was yes. No one else felt like Peter. Once, he even asked the Lord to depart from him, for he was a sinner. His questions and answers often surprised the Son of God!

The other apostles were quiet and waited for the moment to speak. Some, as far as is known, did not even address the Master. The disciples were handpicked and called by Jesus to learn from Him to carry out the work called new wine (Luke 5:38). It was something the world had not even dreamed of knowing, but it would completely change the lives of millions of people. Gospel means Good News, and it was this that Jesus commanded to preach!

The washing of feet that Jesus taught to the disciples teaches us to obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit, to bring to the lost the Word that not only washes the feet but also reaches and transforms the souls of those who no longer know whom to turn to and walk without direction. The Savior acted with profound humility, and this act can be practiced in various ways today.

Returning to the impulsive Peter, he questioned the Master upon seeing Him approach, saying that he would never give Him permission to do that. The Good Shepherd listened and responded calmly, leading him to change his mind and want to be completely washed by Him. Those who have the gift of teaching will guide many people to the Kingdom of God. The wise are very much needed!

Christ wants to teach us many lessons, and all of them are written in the Bible: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work – (2 Timothy 3:16-17). However, some people are swayed by conversations from others that have no biblical basis and, therefore, will add nothing to those who listen to them. Now, the disciple of the Lord must always meditate on the Word in order to speak on any subject. Be wise!

No one wastes time reading the Scriptures every day, for when help is needed, they will recall the teachings found within them. When we don't understand something, it's better to pray seeking for revelation. Thus, in the time of the Most High, understanding will come. Then, we will be able to help others learn about Him who is gentle and lowly in heart (Matthew 11:29).

Let's focus on Peter's question to learn Jesus' lesson: “are You washing my feet?” Christ's response was: “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” (John 13:8d). If we are in the Lord, and He is in us, we can make any request, and it will be granted to us. We have a part with Him!

Today's Prayer

God of our purification! It is good to be washed by You in soul, body, and spirit. Let us imagine caustic soda, which is also Your creation! With it, we make the soap that cleans our clothes, our bodies, and our homes. You are fantastic!

Why don't we seek You, if we have learned from You to do so many things for the afflicted? The ministry of faith only began to be understood with the coming of Your Son. Now, we know that it connects us to You and brings You to bless us!

Help us to fulfill Your will, preaching the Good News, which brings healing and liberation to those who seek You. Nothing is better than living in Your presence. You enchant us and solve our problems. Father, we need You!
