And Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me

2 Kings 19.6

When God gives us a ministry, He also empowers us to carry it out with the necessary strength and authority. No one should try to take on a position if the Lord has not called them to it. Even if that person has good intentions, that won't be enough to succeed. As an example, look at the case of the sons of the high priest Sceva: Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so (Acts 19.14).

These young men thought it was enough to call on the Name of Jesus to show that they had as much power as Paul to do the work as he did. And so they went from town to town. One day, however, they commanded a demon to come out and cast him out for Jesus, whom Paul preached. The evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” (Acts 19.15). This incident showed that no one can simply pretend to have the divine anointing.

Anyone who doesn't do the Lord's work in complete submission is put to shame by the devil. Look what happened to the priest's sons, who tried to pass themselves off as men of God: Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded (Acts 19.16). Fear then fell upon the people of those regions. God is faithful!

Sennacherib, king of Assyria, the largest empire in the world in those days, defeated every nation he invaded. First, he attacked Israel, the northern kingdom, devastating it. Then he rose up against Judah, and the devil made him feel that Judah would be the next to be annihilated. Knowing that the southern kingdom was made up of only two tribes, the king of Assyria took part of his majestic army, expecting an effortless victory.

However, the devil lied to him. In Jerusalem, this terrible leader found a king who loved the Truth with all his heart, and that made the difference; after all, God was with His people. So King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah united in prayer to face the enemy and defeat him, proving their love for the Lord (2 Chronicles 32:20). Remember the Son's words: Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him (John 14.23).

As the northern kingdom was in the hands of the evil one, due to the sin he was spreading in their midst with the support of the rulers there, God was unable to help them, as they had gone beyond the limits of divine tolerance, taken over by the flesh and iniquity. So the devil led the Assyrians to advance against the ten tribes who had turned away from God, doing nothing good. Samaria was taken and destroyed!

In Jerusalem, the situation was different, because King Hezekiah feared God and did what pleased the Lord. However, Sennacherib exalted himself in blasphemy and threats, and Hezekiah cried out to God together with Isaiah. Those were difficult days, but the Most High answered that Hezekiah should not fear the Assyrian king and his servants. An angel came and killed the opposing army. Glory to the Lord!

Today's Prayer

God, our Help! No one imagined what would happen to the army of the Assyrians, who were believed to be invincible. That night, You sent just one angel, who killed the enemy's best soldiers. The next morning, there were 185,000 dead. What a victory!!

We don't need to fear the weapons used by Satan to terrify us into thinking he is victorious, when in fact Jesus defeated him, leaving him in the pit of Hell with his demons. That's the glorious difference: the kingdom of evil is over!

Yes, Lord, the difference is enormous! We have Your love and power to defend us. The scepter of wickedness will never dominate us again. You are our refuge and our fortress. In You, we have everything we need to live a dignified life!
